Hope Squad

Hope Squad Overview

In 2007, as we began a new school year at Riverton High School, we, as counselors, PTSA, and administrators, were determined to become proactive in dealing with the epidemic of suicide ideation and self destructive behavior that occured among our students during the 2005-2006 school year. That was a heartbreaking year in this respect, and we are committed to do all in our power to prevent a repeat.

Statistics state that suicidal students are more likely to tell a peer than an adult. We recognize the importance of educating peers to recognize warning signs and refer to an adult, preferably a counselor or our school psychologist, when in the school setting. For this reason we formed a peer program called the Riverton High School Hope Squad.

Every student was given the opportunity to nominate individuals who they would turn to in time of need for listening or help. From this large list of nominees, plus teacher and counselor nominations, over 120 Hope Squad applications were distributed. Over 50 applicants were then selected to form Riverton's first Hope Squad.

Riverton High School Hope Squad members met for the first time on October 9 for a brief orientation, introduction of Hope Squad Pledge, and ordering of T-shirts.

     The Hope Squad Pledge stages:

I pledge to attend all training sessions to help me recognize the warning signs of suicide and understand my responsibilities.
I pledge to be aware of and befriend students who may need help.
I pledge to be a good listener and maintain confidentiality.
I know I am not a professional counselor or suicide intervention expert, so
I pledge to refer students for help when they are at risk of harm to themselves or others.

A 90 minute training session for Hope Squad members was held October 25, under the direction of Ms. Anita Nielsen, School Psychologist, and Ms. Janeen McMillan, Counselor. Other Hope Squad activities will include monthly meeting/training sessions, a "Hope Week" for the student body (dates to be announced), and various peer education opportunities.
