Girls Spike to Region Champs 08-09, Hope to stay Number One

The volleyball team has much to live up too after finishing with as Region Champions last year. Coach Trudy Pecorelli is confident in her team’s abilities.

Even with the victorious feeling of a Region Championship riding on their shoulders, the team didn’t make to the state finals.

“Getting to state and then the first game in state,” said Pecorelli about what she’s looking forward to this year. “We have been knocked out the first round the last two years by Davis. I would love to get to the second round.”

Pecorelli feels that she may know what the problem is.

“Communication on the court,” Pecorelli said about the teams biggest weakness. “The team who masters that usually takes State!” She also added that while the team has a lot to work on with how it’s working together, she feels that “the pre-season games and tournaments have helped work together more as a single unit.”

Pecorelli talked about her team’s biggest strength as well.

“We do not have to go to one player. They all contribute on the court,” she said.

In addition to it being their biggest strength, she believes that their individual contribution will motivate them as well. Pecorelli doesn’t have to handle the team alone, though. She has Senior Captains Peyton Evans and Jessica Neilson to help her.

“They both have the skills to be good team leaders both on and off the court,” Pecorelli revealed about her Captains. “They know what I expect and do a great job at team camaraderie.”

As for the team’s competition, Pecorelli feels that the biggest competitors will be the ever present Bingham and Taylorsville, which has won all of their pre-season games.

Those games are not far off. The team will face Taylorsville on October 6 and Bingham soon after that on October 10. Both games will take place at 6:00 p.m.

The team is currently ranked number one in the region, with Bingham and Taylorsville in 2 and 3 place. In the 2008 season, they went undefeated in region play until playing Bingham in the last game of the regular season.

The team has improved regularly since past years, however.

In 2002, the team sat in the 5 place spot in the state. In 2005 and 2006, the team sat in the third place spot. 2007 and 2008 granted them a second place seat, and in 2009 they finally reached the number one seed, a lofty goal in the world of sports.

The team has a lot to live up to and can improve in many ways. But with the talent and drive that Pecorelli believes they have, their goals may not be very far away. State Finals may seem impossible, but for a team working so hard, it may not be so impossible after all.
