The RHS football team comes into the final weeks of the season with a 4-1 record-taking second place in region, and beginning the playoffs with the home field advantage. Things seem to have gone pretty well in the 09-10 football season.
Coach Mike Miller says the teams bonding as a whole has been a huge success.
“I love how the young men are coming together to play as a team, which is always hard with over 80 players. I feel our senior class has done a great job making all the players from the sophomore level all the way to the varsity level feel a part of the program,” he said.
As the playoffs get closer, Miller feels the team still needs to start games a little faster but does not plan on changing the routine of practice at all.
“We’re going to prepare the same as we have all year,” he said.
The Silver Wolves Wing-T offence (which is different than most teams in Utah) is doing an exceptional job with 1,954 rushing yards and 766 receiving yards in the 2009 regular season according to the Max Preps web site (www.Maxpreps.com).
The coaches were fully prepared to have a fast, furious, and dominate defense this year according to defensive coordinator, Brent Hawkins.
“We have a very fast and very aggressive defense. Because of this we have tried to take advantage by adjusting to a slightly new defensive scheme,” he said, “I am so proud to be part of this program. We don’t compromise or cheat to be successful and are in the business of educating young men and teaching them to be better people”
Overall the team’s offense is ranked eighteenth and the defense is ranked 30 in the state, as of October 13, on the High School Sports website (www.highschoolsports.net)
Coach Jonny Matich, head coach at Taylorsville High School, said he was not pleased with the outcome after the RHS vs. Taylorsville game, which Riverton won 57-6.
Matich was upset about the game, but only had good things to say about the football program.
“Coach Mike Miller is a class act. He is one of the best in the state. He always brings a solid game plan and a disciplined team. I have the utmost respect for Coach Miller,” he said.
Wide receiver, Lucas Coles, junior, loves that in this program the players come together as brothers and everyone works towards the same goals as a team.
“Riverton football is different from all others because it’s not all about one person, or one player it’s about family and working together. I think that this year the team has accomplished more than any other team to walk at Riverton, we have showed that football is not just a game,” he said.
