Becoming a good debater takes intense dedication, long hours of practice, and a knowledgeable understanding of the world and current events.
RHS’s debate team kicked off its season in early October with great results, taking fourth place in their season opener.
The 2009-2010 season has given coach Cody Henrichsen his biggest team since he started coaching at RHS, and he already has high hopes for the team.
“I’m looking for a strong team, hopefully one that can beat Bingham more often, especially at region,” said Henrichsen.
Bingham has been RHS toughest competition the last few seasons, taking first place at region continuously.
Senior Devan Scoville, one of the team’s varsity members is looking forward to another strong season.
“I’m looking forward to getting more [National Forensics League] seals. Hopefully three more before I graduate.”
She will be competing in Duo Interpretations, which she went to break rounds in the National Qualifiers tournament last year. Her partner, Jordan Shipley, junior, will be accompanying her throughout the season.
The novice members of the team are looking forward to learning, and becoming strong competitors.
Sophomore Shelbey Cook is hoping to compete well, and make some new friends in the process.
“I’m excited to compete and meet new people,” she said while practicing for her first tournament.
The novice teams are currently competing in the policy event, which requires two debaters working together on a team using their case against the opposing team, in hopes of swaying the judge to vote in their favor.
Coach Henrichsen invites anyone to join the team, even if they are not currently enrolled in the class.
“If people are willing to come in and do the work before or after school, I’ll be more than willing to work with them.” said Henrichsen.
