Track and Field:

Indoor Practices Help Members Work to Overcome Obstacles in Pre-Season

By Anthony Gilbert

The indoor track and field season is a pre-season to help the team prepare for the outdoor track and field season in March.

According to many players on the team, everyone is working confidently and hard in practice and the coaching has been great.

Indoor track competitions are good for the team because it enables coaches and players to see what they need to work and improve on. Head coach Jacob Garlick is very excited that the season is finally here.

“I have been waiting all year for track and field to finally begin,” said Garlick.

Garlick is pleased with how promising the team is looking in practice and he also hopes some of the things he sees translate over to competitions.

“I hope to see the same work ethic and technique that we have had in practice at meets,” said Garlick.

Garlick would like to see records be broken this year. He particularly wants the 400m record broken.

“I hope Parker Bluth breaks the state record for the 400m. We hope he will be the 1st ever to have a 46 second open,” said Garlick. The record for the 400m in the state of Utah is 47 seconds.

Good coaching is key in many sports and that does not exclude track and field. Coaches can help players with techniques, give extra motivation, and just give players tips on how to improve the way they perform.

Track and field athletes Javier Coles and Alex Dutton, juniors, are both very happy with the coaching.

“The coaches have done a great deal for the team. They have motivated and encouraged us tremendously,” said Dutton.

Dutton also believes that a Region championship is a possibility and he also hopes that he can improve on his one and-two mile times.

Coles is a sprinter who loves what the coaches do for the team. He is especially pleased with two coaches in particular, Garlick and Coach Beierle.

“Garlick is the most amazing sprinter coach I have ever had and Beierle is great with help on throwing,” said Coles.

Like Dutton, Coles also thinks that region is a definite possibility.

“We have a great shot at region because we have so much talent on the team,” said Coles. Coles also had something to say about the whole team.

“I’m looking forward to a great year. Everyone is great and we are very determined to win and get better. We are just one big family.”
