Gundestrup Not Only a Star, But a Leader

By Tiffanie Butterfeild

Senior Garrett Gundestrup isn’t just another player on the boy’s varsity basketball team. He’s the shooting guard and also captain of his team. Anyone that knows Gundestrup says he is team captain for a reason,

“He is a great leader and I appreciate the example he brings to our program,” said Coach Steve Galley.

Gundestrup doesn’t let the outside world affect his performance on the court. He shuts out all the distractions and focuses on the task at hand.

He has been an active athlete his whole life.

“I was born playing basketball,” he said.

But he has a wide range of interests when it comes to sports. He is also a big football fan. His favorite players for college teams are Dennis Pitta, of BYU or Kellen Moore of Boise State . When it comes to basketball, his favorite player is Stephen Curry, Golden State.

“He is my size and weight and he plays like me. Plus he dominated in March Madness, which is the play offs for college” Gundestrup said.

Not only being captain, but also getting good grades and preparing for life after high school and also having time for friends, family and himself may seem like a lot of pressure. Galley doesn’t think it’s too much for Gundestrup.

“Garrett loves pressure and thrives on it. He has a competitive warrior like spirit and is driven to always win,” Galley said When asked what Gundestrup’s worst quality is Galley’s only reply was

“His grumpy scowl, although I like it.”

People that know Gundestrup didn’t express any bad qualities in him.

However, Samantha Hale, senior, said, “He could improve on being more serious.” McKay Wells, senior, also said “He can have fun in any situation.”

For Gundestrup, his most memorable game so far was in Denver,

“We played Gillete team for a tournament and I did way good and hit a buzzer beater to send it into overtime,” said Gundestrup.

Galley couldn’t pick just one memorable game.

“There are too many to mention. He has hit many big shots for us throughout his career. I admire his eagerness to make game -changing plays in some very difficult situations. Some players shy away from that responsibility and Garrett actually looks for those opportunities.”

Out of the six members of Gundestrup’s family, he is the second oldest. He is very close with his big brother.

“I am always more like the older brother.”

He is also equally close with his little sisters and they have fun together. Gundestrup knows he can always look in the stands and see his family there to support him.
