Dance Company Uses Originality, Innovation in Choreography

By Kenzie Christensen

The RHS Dance Company is a place not only for the visually artistic, but the dedicated and imaginative. The girls in the club choreograph their own pieces, and they have won many awards for their works.

Elizabeth Hansen, the Dance Company advisor, said, “We do invite some guest choreographers to come work with us, but mostly our dances come from the creativity and innovation of our members.”

Hansen also believes that this is what sets Dance Company apart from other groups in the school because the group members decide what they are doing themselves and are in charge of themselves. This is Hansen’s second year in charge of Dance Company, but she has already seen a big improvement in the program from past years.

“The level of talent in our school already seems to be getting better and better,” she said.

The level of ability in the program has been apparent at recent festivals that Dance Company has attended. A piece choreographed by member Taylor Herd, senior, took second place at the Shakespearean Festival. Hansen choreographed a duet for members Jeni Bowman and Taylor Herd took first place at the same festival. The week of Jan. 11 to the 15, the Company performed at the State High School Dance Festival and were awarded scores of “excellent” on both of the pieces they performed. Dance Company feels very proud of their achievements, especially since they choreographed the pieces on their own.

Hansen also stated some other strengths that Dance Company possesses.

“Dance Company is comprised of some very talented, hardworking, and creative dance artists,” she said.

Dance Company is currently busy preparing for their Spring Concert. The performance, titled “Retrospection”, will take place on April 15, 16, and 17 at RHS.
