Students Exceed Expectations for Silver Rush

By Carlie Wilson

Students, parents, teachers, and alumni all gathered into the gym and rushed to find a seat. After inspiring talks and a beautiful song by Jordan Turley, the final amount was announced.

79,555.10 is what RHS had made for Silver Rush this year. Then they announced we had a last minute donation and the real amount was 80,107.25. Not quite as much as last year but everyone was amazed at what we had accomplished.

“I feel great about [raising 80,107.25]. I think this reminded everyone that it’s about helping people not just about raising money,” said Fota Mulitalo, SBO president.

Every year Silver Rush lets students take a look into how different people live. This year RHS had the chance to change the lives of the families living at the road home.

The road home, located downtown is a place where families can live while they are trying to get their lives in order. For $12 a night they can receive the basic necessities shelter, clothing, and food.

Many of the people living there are single mothers, children, and small families. With the large amount of money we make, we helped people to be able to stay in these homes a little longer.

Students went to the Road Home every week and helped out in any way they could. They served food and played with children. Mulitalo said, “I went and played with the kids. They were so cute and happy.”

Silver Rush opens up the minds of many students. Emotions are felt for people that students don’t even know. The Families at the Road Home were happy to receive our donation.

“I was excited, relieved, thrilled, satisfied, ecstatic, I was everything but mostly happy,” said Mulitalo.

Next year RHS will be splitting in half. Many students didn’t think we would make anywhere close to the amount of last year. Once students went to the road home and saw the people living there it gave them a boost.

We ended making it only 2,000 short from last years total.

Mulitalo said, “We didn’t have a set number that we thought we would make i mean with the way the economy is.”
