As the season rolls on, the varsity boys’ basketball team has bounced back after losing to Fremont 48-39 on Dec. 5.
RHS beat Layton 53-45 but then lost to Pleasant Grove which makes them 3-3 for the 09-10 season.
The team is holding its opponents to just 45.4 points per game, while scoring just 47.6 points per game itself.
Head Coach Steve Galley says the team still needs to work on some things.
“We must learn to take better care of the ball and value each possession,” said Galley.
On the flip side, RHS is a young team with a lot of talent and has been doing some things well according to Galley.
“We have a group of players who are willing to persevere. They do not give up and they seek constant improvement,” he said.
Jared Gamblin, junior, who plays as a forward, also had some great things to say about the whole team in general.
“We are going to be one of the nastiest defensive teams in our region, we work great together and we are all close,” said Gamblin. Gamblin also has keys for success for the rest of the season.
“We will do very well as long as we play smart and hard the rest of the way,” said Gamblin. Although RHS is off to a decent start, fans must be patient because this is a team that does not have much experience.
“We are young as far as varsity experience goes, so we are going through some expected growing pains,” said Galley.
According to the Max Preps website (www.Maxpreps.com), the RHS boys’ basketball team is ranked 1447 in the nation and 16 overall in the state of Utah. With the low ranking, RHS will hope to prove that they are one of the better teams in the state.
Coach Galley says that every team he has coached has been different.
“We have never been this inexperienced or small as a varsity group. We are searching for our identity and also searching for the right on-court chemistry and combinations of players that help us reach our potential,” said Galley.
Bingham head coach, Mark Dubach, said that RHS has a good basketball program.
“It is a great program with a long history of success. They are well coached and play together as a team,” said Dubach. Dubach also enjoys the Bingham/Riverton rivalry.
“It is a great rivalry with a lot of fans that enjoy coming out,” he said.
RHS plays their next two games at Pleasant Grove and at Murray before it plays at RHS against Brighton and Weber.
