Girls Basketball Season Starts 4-1

The freezing conditions hasn’t refrained the varsity girls basketball team from starting off the season with four wins.

For the first two games, RHS played high-quality defense holding its opponents to 24.5 points per game and is averaging 50 points per game itself.

With a 2-0 record, head coach Ron Ence is happy with the teams start and the team that was chosen by the coaching staff before the season.

“We are off to a good start and we are working hard to become a cohesive team. All the coaches are happy with the mix of young andolder players on this year’s team,” said Ence.

RHS is ranked fourth in the state and 812 in the nation, according to the MaxPreps website (Maxpreps.com).

According to Ence, the team takes practice very seriously.

“This team practices very hard, they don’t like to waste time in practice,” said Ence.

After starting the season, RHS hopes to extend its winning streak as the team will play away for the next two games against Wasatch and Grantsville.

Caitlin Nelson, senior, plays center on the team and she is happy with the start.

“We have a lot of raw talent and we are coming together very well, I like the way we have started,” said Nelson.

She also attributes the early start to the team coming together as a whole and the way the team has been playing defense. “I expect the team will do very well the rest of the season,” said Nelson.

In Nelson’s opinion, the team enjoys practices and tries to improve.

“We have fun and we work hard,” said Nelson.

As the team works for another season, Ence hopes Riverton fans will appreciate how hard the team works and come out and encourage the team for the rest of the season.

“We hope students will come out and cheer on the girls every chance that they get,” said Ence.

Ence and the team as a whole have good expectations for the rest of the season.

“We expect to compete for a region championship and qualify for the state tournament,” said Ence.
