Stephen Park, and the rest of the Herriman High School staff are busy putting the final touches on the new high school, scheduled to open Aug. 2010.
The school’s mascot and color choices have been determined by the students who plan on attending. Mascot options included the “Patriots,” “Mustangs,” “Hornets,” and the “Thundering Herd”, and color combinations consisted of orange, midnight blue, and white, or red, white, and blue, amongst other choices.
Park said choosing the mascot and color combo wisely is important.
“The Bingham Miners just celebrated their one hundredth anniversary. They have been the Miners for one hundred years now. The mascot you choose today will stay that way for hundreds of years. Your children, your children’s children, and so on will know about Herriman High. It’ll be a part of the school forever,” Park said.
According to the Herriman High School link on the Jordan School District website (www.jordandistrict.org), the official colors and mascot will be chosen by the end of 2009.
Teachers have already been hired, but 20-30 positions still need to be filled.
1,500 students are projected to attend Herriman High in its first year, making it a 5A school.
In anticipation of a large population, Herriman High will feature a larger lunchroom, and more parking than Riverton High.
The new school’s exterior will highly resemble that of RHS and Copper Hills High.
Teachers who have already said they are going to the new school include SBO adviser, Physics, AP Physics and Astronomy teacher Nathan Justis, Yearbook and DVD Yearbook adviser Brent Cox, Biology and AP Biology teacher Kathryn Blattman, and Ceramics III teacher Nicole Warner.
