Jen’s Rants

Disgusting habits. We see them everywhere, especially in our cars. From ‘digging for gold’ to popping zits, we all do them. They are our worst habits.

But why do we do them? I’m sure we could find a better time to change our clothes and show affection with our loved ones. This not only proves disgusting and grosses everyone out, but distracts us from the most important thing at that moment: the road!

Junior Jeremy Cornia said, “Picking their nose? Smoking? Yeah, mostly adults I guess. I haven’t seen too many kids smoking in their cars.”

Senior Jessy Montclair had to agree with his comments. “People picking their noses, picking their teeth. I saw one person flossing and others smelling their armpits.”

Turns out I’m not the only one thinking that taking care of personal hygiene should be saved for our bathroom.

“The grossest thing I have ever seen is someone picking their toe nails,” said junior Lindsey Matthews.

Nose-picking is the habit of using one’s finger to remove dried mucus and even has its own scientific name, which is rhinotillexis, and is practiced by children and also some adults. Eating one’s boogers is a disgusting habit that is particularly popular with children. Some adults still eat their own boogers.

According to the Associated Content website, (www.associatedcontent.com), “An Austrian doctor, Dr. Friedrich Bischinger, even claimed that eating the products of nose-picking could help strengthen our immune system as the dried mucus acts like a vaccine.”

Perhaps belching or passing gas can’t be helped. One way or the other it is going to come out. In fact, experts encourage these otherwise inappropriate habits when uncomfortable. But when others are in the car, please, for everyone else’s sakes wait until others are safely out of smelling distance. If it does so happen that others are inconvenienced, roll down the windows.

Whatever happened to common courtesy? In our society, it is more common to work on ridding ourselves of habits than encouraging them. Obviously, if the only thing learned from this is that other people are watching, then we’ll all be a lot better off than a large percent of drivers.
