Scholarship Information

Applications:  Visit the RHS Counseling Center to research and pick-up applications for private, community, business, and other scholarships.  Scholarship offerings are advertised through our "Award Me Scholarships" bulletin board.  These scholarship listings are posted and updated every two weeks, and provide a student with the criteria, money award amount, and deadlines for each.  Please see or contact Tami Dimmick, Scholarship Coordinator, @ 256-5821 regarding applications.  Seniors are encouraged to review the bulletin board every week.

Congratulations to the Class of 2008 who received a combined total of $2,822,705 in scholarships!! A reminder that if a student receives a scholarship offer of any kind (even if it's not accepted) please report it to Tami so it can be added to the school's totals and you can be recognized for your great achievement.  Student's scholarship awards will also be reflected on the graduation program guide.

A brief guide to applying for scholarships. 

1)  Utah Collegiate Scholarships:  90% of all scholarships awarded to students come from the institution the student attends.  Awards primarily consist of academic merit, talent or skills based, diversity, leadership, departmental, or by student financial need (i.e., low estimated family contribution, EFC, as determined by completion of the FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  Below are links to the scholarship pages for Utah Colleges & Universities.

2)  State Scholarships: Scholarship offered by the Utah State Office of Education and the Utah System of Higher Education. 

Centennial Scholarship - Students are eligible to receive a $250 tuition waiver ($1,000 max) for every quarter in which they graduate early.  Contact your RHS counselor for more information.  Amount: $250 to $1,000.

Robert C. Byrd Scholarship - Students must be a high school graduate, be accepted full-time to an accredited higher education institution (college acceptance letter included with application), achieve a minimum ACT score of 25, have a 3.70 GPA, and provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.  Amount: Up to $1,500.

Regents Scholarship - Students who complete a college rigorous course of study in high school may qualify for a tuition waiver/scholarship.  Visit utahsbr.edu for more information.  Amount: $1,000 or up to 75% tuition for two years of college.  Priority Deadline: Jan. 05, '09.  Application Deadline: February 01, 2009.

New Century Scholarship - Students who complete an Associates Degree prior to Sept. 01 of their graduating year, or who complete a specific math/science college course of study may qualify for 75% tuition towards college.  Visit utahnewcentury.org for more information, or contact Holly Perry, SLCC Advisor, @ 957-4844, regarding course requirement planning.  Brochure / Associates Degree Verification / Math & Science / Associate's Degree Planner

3)  RHS Counseling Center Scholarships:  Contact Tami (256-5820) in the Counseling Center for an application for any of the following:

AXA Achievement - Must be U.S. citizen or legal resident, a senior who will be enrolling in college, must be recommended by an adult professional, and must demonstrate ambition and self-motivation (drive) in school, the community, and/or workplace.  Amount: $10,000 - $15,000  Deadline:  Must be postmarked by Dec. 15, '08.

Lynn Jensen Memorial - Must be a senior planning on becoming a school counselor or teacher for grades K-12.  Amount: $500.  Deadline: Postmarked by Dec. 18th, 2008.

Abbott & Fenner Business Consultants - Must be a U.S. citizen, a senior, and planning on enrolling in college within a year from scholarship award date.  Amount: $12,000. Deadline: Dec. 31st, 2008.  Apply online at www.abbottandfenner.com/scholarships.htm

Essay Contest, "I Won't Cheat" - Grades 10 - 12, Write a one page essay on "Why Does Character Matter Most?"  Amount: $3,000 total:  $1,000 to student, $1,000 to designated teacher, and $1,000 to school.  Deadline: Dec. 31, 2008.

Gates Millennium Scholars - Must be African-American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic American who has demonstrated leadership abilities through community service or extracurricular activities, must be a US Citizen, have a 3.30 GPA, and demonstrate need for PELL Grant via the FAFSA.  Amount: Full Ride Tuition (at least $35,000)  Deadline: January 12th, 2009 (online)  Register with "Online Communities" tab on the homepage at www.gmsp.org

National Multiple Sclerosis Society - Any Senior with MS, or is the child of someone with MS.  Amount: $1,000 - 3,000. Deadline: Postbarked by Jan. 15, '00.

McKelvey Foundation - Must be a senior who has demonstrated entrepreneurials spirit by owning and operating your own business while in high school (non-profits are eligible).  Your business must have at least one employee, even if only part-time.  Amount: Up to $40,000. Deadline: Jan. 25, '09.

Energy Solutions - Must be a current Sophomore with a 3.5 GPA.  Must be planning on entering a Bachelor's program in math, science, or engineering.  Must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident.  Must be active in leadership, work, and extracurricular activities.  Amount: $2,000  Deadline: Jan. 31st, 2009.  Apply online at www.energysolutionsfoundation.org or see Tami Dimmick in Counseling.

Mental_Floss Magazine - Go online at www.tuitiongiveaway.com, fill out entry form and submit a 750 word or less essay answering the question "Why are you the most deserving person on the planet to win this scholarship?"  Amount: $10,000. Deadline: Jan. 31, '09.

NROTC (Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps) - Must be a senior.  Scholarships are based on a competitive selection process including; academics, ACT or SAT scores, extracurriculuar activities, leadership qualities, etc...  There is also a 4-year Nursing scholarship for students who want to pursue this field.  There is no obligation on the part of the student applying for this scholarship.  Amount: Up to $180,000. Deadline: Jan. 31, '09.

Utah Association of Educational Office Professionals - Must be a senior that plans on continuing his/her education in an office-related business program.  Must have completed two or more business education courses in high school, and must have at least a 2.9 GPA.  Amount: $500.00. Deadline: Jan. 31, '09.

Discover [Juniors Only] - Must have cumulative GPA of 2.75 and excel in special talents, leadership, and community service.  Apply online at www.applyists.net using access key DISC.  Amount: $2,500 to $25,000.  Deadline: Jan. 31, '09.

Burger King - Must be a senior, have a GPA of 2.5 or higher, work an average of 15 hours per week, 40 weeks per year.  Must be a volunteer in a community service organization and have financial need for a scholarship.  Apply online at www.bk.com/scholars.  Amount: $1,000. Deadline: Postmarked by Feb. 02, '09.

KFC Colonel's Scholar - Must be a U.S. citizen, senior with a GPA of 2.75 or higher, and planning on pursuing a bachelor's degree starting Fall of '09.  Amount: $5,000. Deadline: Feb. 10, 2009, (online applications available from Dec. 01, '08 through Feb. 10, '09, at www.kfcscholars.com.)

South High Alumni Association - Available to any direct descendant of South High School Alumni.  Must have at least a 2.5 GPA and seeking a degree at Salt Lake Community College.  Amount: Half to full tuition per year.  Deadline: March 01, '09.

Salt Lake Community College - Must be a senior with a 2.5 GPA or higher.  Must be involved in the community.  Write a one page essay on "if you were given $10,000 to better your community, what would you do and why?"  Also required, two letters of recommendation.  Amount: 150 credit hours at SLCC.  Deadline: March 01, '09.

Flying J - Must be a senior with a 3.00 GPA or higher, and planning to attend college.  Amount: $2,000.  Deadline: March, 01, '09.

Susan W. Coda Memorial - Specifically for females going to college outside of Utah.  Must be a Utah resident with at least a 3.8 GPA, be accepted to a college outside of Utah, demonstrated leadership, and participated in extra-curricular activities in school and the community.  Amount: $2,000 to $3,000.  Deadline: Postmarked by March 01, '09.

Renaissance Hair Design - One needs two letters of recommendation; a list of activities, honors, awards, community involvement/leadership activities; a 300 word essay; and a paragraph or two describing your educational and professional goals.  Amount: Up to $2,000.  Deadline: March 16, '09.

Essay Contest [Sophomores] - Essay on the "Ayn Rand" book anthem.  Write an essay (no fewer than 600 or greater than 1200 words).  Essays will be judged on both style and content.  Amount: $30 to $2,500.  Deadline: March 20, '09.

U of U Art - Must enroll as a pre-art major, have a minimum 3.5 GPA, recommendations from 3 teachers, and a portfolio.  Amount: Two-semesters full tuition.  Deadline: Teacher recommendations by March 01, '09 at www.sa.utah.edu/finance/scholarships/scholar/freshman/index.htm, and student applications are due by March 23, '09 at www.sa.utah.edu/finance/scholarships/scholar/college/index.htm

BYU Management Society - Must be a senior and able to show recent community or religious service activities, have financial need, and requires two letters of recommendation.  Amount: $500 to $3,000.  Deadline: Postmarked by March 31, '09.

Symantec Software - Create a science project that involves writing computer software that solves a specific problem. Enter your project into a Utah regional science fair by first qualifying at both the school and district fairs. You must register with Symantec Corporation as a participant (do this at the same time you enter the regional fair).  Amount: $10,000.

4)  Military Funding:

U.S. Army ROTC - If you are a Scholar, Athlete, and a Leader you can qualify for a $52,800 scholarship through the Army ROTC program. They will hold it if you are planning on going on a mission. There is no obligation the first year. If you decide the Army ROTC is not for you, you can walk away from the scholarship with no commitment to pay back the scholarship. 5)  National Website Searches:

Fastweb.com  Search over 600,000 scholarships worth over $1 billion dollars.  Students can enter a profile of information and have Fastweb match scholarships with a student's abilities, academics, skills, interests, or other identified traits/measures. 

UtahMentor.org is another great resource for conducting national scholarship searches.  Use a keyword association search, or match scholarships via a student profile entry.

Leadership Opportunity:  National Youth Leadership Conference, Washington D.C.

The National Youth Leadership Conference is an intensive 6 day leadership program available to Riverton High Seniors.  Scholars can be nominated by their counselor.  Students examine the concept of leadership in the context of national and global issues.  NYLC's curriculum is based upon a thematic approach, focusing on constitutional government at the legislative executive, and judicial branches.  Students assume the role of government officials to experience the delicate balance required of those who must weight the needs to different constituencies against national priorities in realistic situations.  Dates available:  March 3-8, 10-15, 17-22, 24-29, March 31-April 5, and April 7-12.  Cost to attend is around $1,500.00.  If you are interested in being nominated by your counselor to attend this opportunity, contact Tami Dimmick in the Counseling Center, at 256-5821.
