Federal Financial Aid & FAFSA Seniors are encouraged to complete the online FAFSA form early February for optimal financial aid eligibility and opportunities. Some state monies are first come first serve, and most colleges begin packaging awards in March and April of senior year. FAFSA may also be required to be eligible for collegiate and/or certain state scholarships. Juniors can begin the process anytime during 11th grade using the federal FAFSA4Caster, which information is transferred directly to their senior year FAFSA. FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid, is the application that is required for any college student to apply for federal and state grants (i.e., PELL, ACG, LEAP, and UCOPE), federal and state work study options on campus, and federal student loans (i.e. Stafford subsidized and unsubsidized - interest rates at 5.5% as of July 01, '09) Visit the Utah Higher Education Assistance Authority (UHEAA) for more information. Utah Colleges and Universities accept the FAFSA and receive a student's EFC (Estimated Family Contribution) when figuring a student's financial aid "Award Report" received initially from the Federal Department of Education. The application may be completed using a paper and pencil application (available in the counseling center in January) or online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Students are encouraged to complete the application online for much faster results. An electronic "pin" is required by both a student and parent when electonically signing your FAFSA. This electronic "pin" can be obtained at the same time while completing the online FAFSA. Pins are good for 10 years.
