New Riverton High School Principal

Mr. Brad Sorensen will be principal of Riverton High School effective July 1, replacing
Mr. Stephen Park, who will be principal of the new high school located in Herriman.

Language Arts Summer 2009 Reading Assignment

The summer 2009 reading has been chosen. it is Three Cups of Tea by Greg Morrison.
All RHS students are required to read this book prior to the 2009-2020 school year start.


Book synopsis: Nursed back to health by an impoverished Pakistani village after an
unsuccessful mountain-climbing trip, Greg Mortensen vows to return and give the village
something they need desperately: A School. Mortensen keeps his promise to the village and
goes on to build more than fifty schools in Pakistan - so far. This is the true story of how
one man is making a difference in the world, one village at a time.

RHS Student Awards


37 students at RHS had perfect attendance for the 2008-2009 school year. They are
Stephanie Argyle, Stephen Basile, Matthew Baxter, Matthew Bowen, Shannon Boyle,
Jared Capson, Brittny Clark, Ryan Clayton, Marlee Cook, Spencer Crapo,
Skylar Deweese, Elliott Fritz, Taylor Gomez, Nicholas Hansen, Ashley Hardy,
Krysten Hoffman, Robert Jager, Justin Jamison, Christian Kunz, Zachary Larkin,
Rebecca Lott, Jacob Markus, Braydon Mason, Andriel Newman, James Obray,
Christopher Olsen, Alexander Parata, Holley Robison, Jaquelle Rosquist,
Aurora Rowley, Gia Rushton, Terre Short, Jordan Taylor, Ethan Turner,
Jacob Vanwagoner, Brendan Warkentin, and Jacob Wiese

A team comprised of Nathan Burton, Ryan Carlsen and Sam White won the Physics Bowl competition at Lagoon. Each received Presidential Scholarships to Utah State, a four year full tuition scholarship.
Brady Craig and Kendall Schouten won the AAA/Ford Auto Skills Contest. Brady and Kendall will travel to Dearborn, Michigan to compete against teams from every state in the national contest June 14-16.

Aubrie Haymore was named the Outstanding Female Athlete at the
Davis Invitational Track Meet

Stephanie Goodwin was named Academic Allstate in Track. She was also awarded the Riverton City Choice Award.

Aubrie Haymore set a new 100-Meter Dash State Record.
She ran the distance in 11.98 seconds

Sophomore Shawn Bennett took first place in a State Trap Shoot meet.
He shot 249 out of 250, including a run of 244 hits in a row.
The following RHS art students have won cash and other prizes, including 'Best of Show' in various art shows throughout the state: John Rogers, Jeff Griffin, Kayla Fayerweather, Dani Spencer, Parker McCormick
and Stephanie Emch
.
Riverton students won 30 awards, 6 Gold, 19 Silver, 5 Bronze at the FCCLA State competition. The FCCLA winners are Elilsabeth Anderson, Marisa Andrews, Richel Aratari, Sumera Awan, Shelby Bounds, Christi Coats, Kendra Davis, Jorey Dixon, Melinda Downs, Emi Exeter, Kyra Gaillard, Amber Garfield, Diedra Ha, Brittany Hunter, Jessica Jaynes, Courtney Leavitt, McKenna Maxwell, Megan Mitchell, Ashley Ockler, Ashley Park,
Shay Payne, Dailee Perucci, Kelli Quillen, Derrick Rougeau, Gia Rushton, Autumn Sims, Whitney Sirrine, Emily Thompson, and Colette Whitaker.
Scott Friel was named to the Deseret News Boys Basketball 5A First Team.
Nine RHS students earned a combined total of 18 medals at the Utah State Science Olympiad: Nathan Burton, Whitney Cafarelli, Riley Lamborn,
Zach McBride, Daniel Obray, Chris Olsen, Weston Prestwich,
and Jacob VanWagoner
Sixteen Science students earned 1st place at the BYU Regional Science Fair: Sage Allen, Parker Bluth, William Christensen, Ashley Hardy,
Nolan Harris, Jacob Howell, Jeffrey Hutchings, Riley Lamborn,
Josh Larson, J. Daniel Obray, Michael Rencher, Andrew Shaw,
Heidi Stromberg, Katie Stromberg, Mitchell Tracy,
and Catherine Westberg
First Place and Grand Champ awards were given to the RHS Silverline at the Nationals in Anaheim, CA
Stephanie Goodwin won the Douglas F. Bates Community Service Award in the Sterling Scholar Program

Sam White is a Sterling Scholar Runner-up in Computer Technology

Dani Lockhart and Alle Finch were named to the Deseret News Girls Basketball 5A First Team. Dani averaged 14 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals per game. Alle averaged 8 points, 4 assists, and 3 steals per game

Jason Buss won the Utah State American Legion Oratorical Competition. He will be going on to a National Convention in Indianapolis to compete in the National Competition

Ryan Carlsen, Aaron Sharp, Christine Wasserbaech, and Sam White are all National Merit Scholarship Finalists

LeAnna Willmore was awarded a Huntsman Award for Excellence in Education
Gordon Hinckley was awarded the 2009 State of Merit by the Utah Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association
Melissa Brown, Janet Fotu, Donna Hunter and Trish Serre earned their National Board Certification, Level 3, Teaching Certificate.
Counselor Jerry Payne was named the Riverton High School Teacher of the Year by the South Valley Chamber of Commerce
Karl McKenzie was named the Jordan Education Foundation RHS Outstanding Special Educator of the year
Gayle Whitefield was named the Jordan Education Foundation RHS Outstanding Educator of the year
LeAnna Willmore was awarded the Golden Apple award
from the State of Utah PTA
April Squires won the Utah Press Association award for 2008 High School "Better Newspaper Contest", 2nd Place

Firearm and Firearm Facsimile Warning

Possessing a Facsimile of a Weapon May Result
in 180-day Suspension from School

Poseer un facsímil de una arma puede resultar en 180-días de suspención

Students and parents are reminded that a new federal law prohibits the use or possession of a weapon or a facsimile of a weapon on school premises. The most popular facsimile of weapons to date include the popular Air-soft guns. The law is very clear that students possessing a facsimile of a weapon at school, regardless of intent, may be suspended for 180 days.

Estudiantes y padres, recuérdense que una nueva ley federal prohibe el uso o posesión de una arma o facsímil de una arma en los locales escolares.  El más popular facsímil de una arma hoy día incluye la arma popular que se llama “Air-soft guns”.  La ley es muy clara que estudiantes que poseen una facsímil de una arma en la escuela, a pesar del intento, puede ser suspendido por 180 días.
